Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid gel injected into the lip to add volume, restore definition or improve hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your body already makes and already breaks down, which is why the result is temporary and can be reversed.
Most people arrive asking for volume, and volume is often not the thing that would improve their lips. Lips read as attractive because of proportion and structure: the ratio between upper and lower, a defined border, a visible cupid's bow, corners that sit level rather than turning down. A lip that is simply made bigger without addressing any of that is exactly the lip that looks filled.
So the injection is planned around structure. Filler placed in the body of the lip adds volume. Filler along the vermilion border sharpens definition and stops a soft lip looking blurred. A small amount at the corners lifts a mouth that has started to turn down. Which of those you need depends on the lips you have, and it is decided by looking at your face rather than by a quantity you booked in advance.
Quantity matters less than most people expect. We start at 0.7ml or 1ml, because a millilitre is roughly a fifth of a teaspoon and it goes further than people imagine. If you want more you can have more at a later appointment, once the first has settled and you have lived with it for a fortnight. That sequencing is deliberate: it is how you avoid the overfilled look, which is almost always the result of adding a lot at once rather than of the product itself.
Everything is reversible. If you dislike the result, or the shape needs correcting, hyaluronidase dissolves hyaluronic acid filler and your lips return to their natural shape within days. Very few aesthetic treatments have that safety net, and it is a large part of why hyaluronic acid became the standard.

The overfilled lip is not caused by filler. It is caused by adding volume to a lip whose structure cannot hold it, or by adding it faster than the tissue can adapt. Lips have a finite amount of skin. Push more product into them than that skin can accommodate and the filler goes where there is room, which is outwards and upwards above the lip border, giving the shelf that everyone recognises immediately.
This is why the assessment is not a formality. We look at the ratio between your upper and lower lip, how much lip you show at rest and when you smile, where your border has softened, and whether the thing bothering you is really the lip at all, since a downturned mouth or a heavy chin can change how lips read. Sometimes the honest answer is 0.7ml and not 1ml, or the corners rather than the body, or that your lips are fine and something else is the issue. We would rather say that than sell you a millilitre.

It is not right for everyone. We will not treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active cold sore or infection in the area, or have a history of severe allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid. If you have had filler elsewhere that has migrated above the lip border, that usually needs dissolving before anything new is placed.
